FTP stands for “File Transfer Protocol”. It is a means for uploading or downloading files from another server or host to or from your local PC over the internet. FTP applications can be used to download your web site files to your local computer where they can be edited. Once edited the files can then be uploaded to share over the internet. When a web hosting account is created with your web host, you will be given a user id and password to access your FTP location on the web host. This is the same location you will copy your files to for users to view your site using their web browser.
